DUAL ENROLLMENT
Academic Class
Sports
In Iowa, dual enrollment is a legal option for students under Competent Private Instruction (CPI) to access public school services, activities, and classes. For example, a student could dual enroll for band, orchestra, sports, or an academic class(es).
HSAP does NOT fall under dual enrollment.
-
Students who are WDM residents may participate at their local school if there is room available.
-
Students who are open enrolled will be placed at one of the WDM Schools where there are openings.

Orchestra
ORCHESTRA:
Students may begin orchestra in fourth grade. This includes small group lessons and large group rehearsal. During the school year, elementary students have several opportunities to perform as part of a large ensemble during the orchestra concerts. In addition, solo and chamber ensemble opportunities are available through the Solo and Ensemble Festival held once a year as well as the Chamber Concert held each spring.
4th-6th grade: The typical commitment is attending the school two times a week; small group lessons and the full group orchestra.
Students are asked to practice 20-30 minutes daily.
7th-8th grade: This is a commitment of going to the school every other day for the full group orchestra. Small group lessons will be scheduled at another time. Students will also need to incorporate daily practice.
9-12th grade: Students receive credit for orchestra in high school. Currently Valley has a block schedule. Students will attend on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Instruments can be purchased or rented through a music store or the Valley Orchestra Guild. There are a few larger instruments, cello and bass, available through the school.
Other expenses include lesson books, rosin, shoulder rest (violin and viola only), and rock stop (cello and bass only.) Accommodations can be made for students who need financial support.
Parental interest and encouragement are very important for student success.
